In February 2005, education charity Schools OUT founded LGBT+ History Month UK as a dedicated space to celebrate the rich and diverse history of the LGBT+ community. Every February since, the month has become increasingly popular with events held in education settings, public spaces, organisations, and businesses across the UK. Each year, Schools Out set a new theme, choose five LGBT+ historical figures to highlight, and create free resources for people to use.
February 2025 marks the 20 year anniversary of LGBT+ History Month. That is 20 years of claiming our past, celebrating our present, and creating our future.
Join us on Thursday 23rd January 7pm-8pm for this special virtual event to Celebrate 20 years of LGBT+ History Month together. During the event we will:
hear how LGBT+ History Month first began from Professor Emeritus Sue Sanders, Chair of Schools Out UK and co-founder of LGBT+ History Month UK.
explore the development and impact of LGBT+ History Month over the last 20 years with Lynne Nicholls, Chair of Trustees of Schools Out UK.
learn about the new theme for LGBT+ History Month 2025 and the resources available with Sarah Cosgriff, Project Worker for Schools Out UK.
take time for Q&A, and sharing ideas for how to celebrate LGBT+ History Month 2025.
